1998 Formula Mazda, finished in black and silver with a black interior. Built to compete in the SCCA's Formula Mazda category, this race car features a tubular chassis, fiberglass body panels, 13-inch BBS wheels, a Schroth 6-point safety harness, a Stack SW digital display module, and an aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) fire suppression system, among other equipment.Formula Mazda was born in the 1980s as a way for enthusiasts to hit the track on a relatively low budget. Winning a Formula Mazda race required more skills than money because every car on the starting grid was identical; engine, suspension, and aerodynamic modifications were not allowed. As of 2020, cars built to Formula Mazda specifications no longer have their own category to race in but they're eligible to compete against other open-wheel models in the Formula X category at SCCA Road Racing events.Power comes from a 1.3-liter twin-rotor Wankel engine. Built by Mazda and called "13B" internally, it spins the rear wheels via a Hewland Mk9 5-speed manual transmission.
