The Passat was the only vehicle to ever receive Volkswagen's unique W8 engine, essentially two 15-degree V4s joined together at a 72-degree angle, utilizing two timing chains that drive four camshafts. The W8 served as a proof of concept for the later "W"-configuration motors seen on high-end Volkswagens, Audis, Bentleys, and Bugattis, and according to Volkswagen, fewer than 11,000 W8-equipped examples were produced for the entire world.Power comes from a 4.0-liter W8, rated at 270 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to all four wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission and Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
