The S8 was released as a sportier evolution of the second-generation A8 (called "D3" internally) for 2007. Positioned at the top of the firm's sedan range, it was larger than its predecessor but the use of aluminum kept its weight in check and a firmer suspension system gave it surprisingly sharp handling.
