Sharing the same front architecture as the new water-cooled 996, the Boxster featured a mid-mounted "M96" flat-six engine. It was immediately well-received by enthusiasts, some even called it better than the 911, and the praises grew louder when Porsche gave the base Boxster a bigger, more powerful engine for the 2000 model year.Power comes from a mid-mounted 2.7-liter flat-6, rated at 217 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.
