2015 BMW i3 Range Extender, finished in Laurel Grey Metallic with a Carum Spice SensaTec interior. This i3 features the 2 cylinder gasoline-fueled range extender generator ("REX"), which adds an EPA-estimated 70 miles of range. The i3 was BMW's first purpose-built electric car and was offered as a pure EV and with a range-extender 2-cylinder gasoline engine. Introduced in the U.S. in 2014, the i3 boasts futuristic styling and a spacious B-pillarless design with rear-hinged rear doors. The i3 also features a carbon fiber upper body structure and an aluminum undercarriage and battery housing to minimize weight. A 22-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery powers the 125-kilowatt electric motor, which delivers 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. In this Range Extender model, the battery's EPA-estimated 72-mile range is augmented by the generator engine.
