Available at launch, the V8-powered 540i remained positioned as the quickest and most expensive non-M-badged model until production ended after the 2003 model year. It was initially only offered as a sedan, but a wagon joined the range for 1999.Power comes from an "M62" 4.4-liter V8, rated at 290 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque.
