2017 BMW i8, finished in Protonic Red with an Amido Black interior. Factory equipment includes 20-inch wheels, BMW Laserlight headlights, heated and power-adjustable seats, a Harman-Kardon sound system, and a navigation system. BMW's i8 brought concept car styling to showrooms when it made its debut for the 2014 model year. Its wildly futuristic design hid a plug-in hybrid powertrain that delivered sports car-like acceleration, fuel economy on par with a compact car's, or electric-only driving for short distances, depending on the driving mode selected. Production ended in 2020. BMW released the Protonic Red edition for the 2017 model year. Mechanically unchanged, it stood out from the regular-production i8 with Protonic Red exterior paint and carbon fiber interior trim, among other features. Around 400 units were sold globally.Power comes from a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, which consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, 2 electric motors, and a 7.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. The system develops a maximum output of 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, and it spins the front, the rear, or the 4 wheels, via a 6-speed automatic transmission if the 3-cylinder engine is running.
