Called "NB" internally, it received an updated design, a more powerful engine, and a bigger trunk, among other changes. It was easier to live with on a daily basis but it lost none of its predecessor's agility. Mazda replaced the "NB" with the 3rd-generation "NC" model in 2006.Released in 1999, the 10th Anniversary Edition model gained features like a 6-speed manual transmission, polished wheels, Bilstein suspension components, and a front strut bar. Mazda made 7,500 units globally, and 3,000 of those were earmarked for America.Power comes from a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, rated at 140 horsepower and 119 lb-ft of torque. It spins the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission and a Torsen limited-slip differential.
