The E36 generation of the iconic BMW M3 was the first M3 powered by an inline-6 engine. Originally, the United States was not slated to get an M3. After owners famously banded together and demanded one be made, BMW brought the M3 to the U.S. market with a de-tuned and simpler engine than the European M3 due to emissions restrictions. It was a major commercial success for BMW, and it cemented the BMW M brand in the U.S.Power comes from an "S52" 3.2-liter inline-6 engine, rated at 240 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque in stock form.
